If you’re considering a career as a massage therapist, it’s probably because you’re passionate about helping others.
Earning a remedial massage qualification can help you help others by working in a diverse range of fields, including sports, injury management, allied health, and health and wellbeing. In all areas, you’ll get to work closely with clients to help them achieve their health and mobility goals.Â
Massage therapy is a rewarding career, and requires a unique skill set and plenty of specialised knowledge. Because of this, it’s important to complete a Diploma of Remedial Massage or other industry-recognised course with an accredited provider.
Like any form of higher education, choosing to study remedial massage is a big commitment, and one you should consider carefully before getting started.
Interested in becoming a massage therapist?
Before you jump headfirst into a Diploma of Remedial Massage, ask yourself the following 5 questions to see if it’s the right pathway for you.
Â
1. Do I want to improve people’s quality of life?
If you’re friendly, personable, and love helping people, remedial massage could be the right path for you.
As a remedial massage therapist, you’ll make a real difference in your clients’ lives by minimising pain, discomfort, and mobility issues caused by muscle tension.
For clients recovering from injury or illness, this can seriously transform their day-to-day quality of life for the better.
Â
2. What are my long-term and short-term goals?
A remedial massage qualification can open up a range of rewarding careers that can evolve over time.
In the short-term, you may want to work for a physio or chiro, but in the longer term you may want a job that offers flexibility around your family commitments.
You may also want to consider further study at university in areas like Health Science, Nutrition, Exercise Science, and Occupational Therapy.
A career as a remedial massage therapist will let you do all of this and more!
Down the line, you may want to open your own spa, retreat, or wellness centre, join a physiotherapy clinic, or become part of the crew onboard a cruise ship. No matter what your goals are, studying remedial massage can be an exciting pathway toward achieving them.
Â
3. What level of commitment will I need to make?Â
Our remedial massage course will require you to study full-time for 12 months at any one of our six campuses.
You can expect to spend at least 25 hours a week learning remedial massage techniques and studying anatomy, physiology, functionality, and functional assessment, in addition to injury prevention and management.
You’ll also need to complete 200 supervised clinical hours to grow your practical skills and consolidate your knowledge.
The Demi International Diploma of Remedial Massage is one of the most well-rounded remedial massage courses in Queensland, and also includes business training that can help you set up your own spa or clinic in future.
Â
4. Where will I study?
In order to become a remedial massage therapist and offer health fund rebates to your clients, you need to be a member of the Australian Massage Association.
To join the Australian Massage Association, you need to complete your remedial massage training at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that offers a nationally recognised course.
When choosing an RTO, consider how long it has been around for and what its track record is.
Graduate feedback is a great way to gauge the quality and overall experience of a course, and can play a huge part in your decision of where to study.
At Demi International, our reputation as an industry-respected RTO is backed by testimonials from our graduates, 98% of whom would recommend studying with us.
5. What career can I transition into?
A Diploma of Remedial Massage is a recognised pathway to careers in Myotherapy, Exercise Science, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Health Science.
A remedial massage qualification also complements careers in Psychology, Yoga, Nutrition, Nursing, and Personal Training.
A remedial massage course can also help build the foundation for further study at university. If you decide to undertake university studies in future, the knowledge and practical skills in time management and independent learning will no doubt be a big help.
