Rachel Holmes is a vibrant hairdressing expert with a 15-year tenure running her own business, Sweet Venemus Hair. Starting her career at the age of 15, Rachel has honed her skills in various roles including working on cruise ships and as a colour educator, and is particularly passionate about bright and fashion colour work.

Get to know Rachel

So, besides Demi, where else are you working? And how long have you been there?

I have been working at Sweet Venemus Hair, my own business, for 15 years.

When did your hairdressing career begin? What was your first role? What other roles have you had?

I started hairdressing when I was 15 as a tea and tidy. After I finished my apprenticeship, I worked as a hairdresser and manager on cruise ships. I am the owner/operator of my own salon, and I have worked as a color educator and taught dance fitness.

What did you study to launch your career? Where did you study?

I started a Certificate II in Hair & Beauty at QLD TAFE.

What are your particular areas of expertise?

All facets of hairdressing, but I particularly love bright and fashion color work.

How do you think the industry will change in the next 10 years?

More sustainable salons offer a wider choice of lower-chemical hair colors and products.

What are common questions prospective students always want to know before studying hairdressing?

People often ask me, “Is it hard being a hairdresser? You know, cutting someone’s hair and making a mistake. And is the pay good?”

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in a career in your industry?

Creativity and attention to detail are essential. Be confident, smile, and wear good shoes.

What do you love about teaching hair?

Inspiring my students with my passion for hair and motivating them to become their dream.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The highlight of my career has been being able to make my clients walk away feeling amazing.
